The campus we run for benzodiazepine treatment in Texas is Promises Brazos Valley. It is at 3550 Normand Drive in College Station. It runs medical detox plus the levels above and below it, so withdrawal care and treatment happen on one site.

Start with the part that changes what you do today. Benzodiazepines are one class where stopping alone can be the risky choice, not the careful one. Federal drug-safety guidance is blunt about it. Stopping abruptly, or cutting the dose too fast, can cause withdrawal reactions including seizures, which can be life-threatening [1].

If someone is having a seizure, is unresponsive or has trouble breathing, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

The rest of this page covers what the published data shows. Then where in Texas to get treated, who needs detox, what each level of care involves, what medication can and cannot do here, how coverage works, and what the drive looks like. Our overview of Benzodiazepine Addiction covers the drug class itself in more depth.

Benzodiazepine Use in Texas: What the Published Data Shows

This class is prescribed at enormous scale, and that is the context a Texas reader is sitting inside.

In 2019 an estimated 92 million benzodiazepine prescriptions were dispensed from U.S. outpatient retail pharmacies [1]. Alprazolam made up 38 percent of them, clonazepam 24 percent and lorazepam 20 percent [1]. That is a national figure, not a Texas one. This page will not turn it into a state number that no state agency has published.

The finding underneath the count matters more. Physical dependence can occur when benzodiazepines are taken steadily for several days to weeks, even when they are taken as prescribed [1].

That is the sentence that catches people out. Someone who never took more than the label said can still be dependent. They can still be in danger if they stop without help.

Misuse is a separate route. Taking a medicine in any way other than prescribed is misuse: someone else’s prescription, more than prescribed, a different route, or use to get high [2]. Sedatives and tranquilizers are named among the classes where misuse can lead to addiction [2].

Both routes end at the same question, which is where the next section starts.

Where Texas Residents Can Get Benzodiazepine Treatment

Promises Brazos Valley is at 3550 Normand Drive, College Station, Texas 77845. Its own page publishes medical detox, inpatient rehab, inpatient mental health rehab, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programming and aftercare [9].

The campus describes itself in its own words as a treatment center for adults and young adults, with specialized tracks for young adults and professionals [9].

We run other campuses in Texas too. This page is about the College Station one because that is where it routes. If you live closer to another part of the state, the admissions team can say which site fits.

The range of levels matters here for one reason: continuity. Benzodiazepine withdrawal is not a weekend. Federal guidance builds detox out of three parts — evaluation, stabilization, and fostering the person’s entry into treatment [3]. The same guidance says plainly that detoxification “is not substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation” [3]. A campus that holds the next level in the same building removes the most common place to drop out, which is the handover.

Does Benzodiazepine Use Need Medical Detox First?

Often yes, and the reason is specific rather than general caution.

Federal treatment guidance groups sedative withdrawal with alcohol withdrawal, not with opioid withdrawal. Its own contrast sentence reads: unlike alcohol and sedative withdrawal, uncomplicated opioid withdrawal is not life-threatening [4]. Read the other way round, that sentence is a warning about this class.

The same chapter says what the medical problems look like. They resemble those seen in alcohol withdrawal [4]. Seizures are particularly worrisome, and a seizure may occur without being preceded by other evidence of withdrawal [4]. As in alcohol withdrawal, seizures and delirium are the most extreme pathology seen [4].

That last point is the one to sit with. There is not always a warning stage. Someone can feel they are coping, then have a seizure with no build-up they could have read as a signal.

If someone is having a seizure, is unresponsive or has trouble breathing, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

Whether one person needs an inpatient setting is a clinical judgment. A page cannot decide it. An assessment weighs what is being taken, for how long, what else is being used with it, and what happened at any earlier attempt to stop. Our explainer on Medical Detox sets out what that assessment involves. Our guide to Withdrawal Symptoms of Alcohol and Drugs is background reading, not a scoring tool.

Levels of Care at the College Station Campus

Six levels are published on the campus’s own page, and they are worth reading as a sequence rather than a menu [9].

Medical detox is the withdrawal stage, watched and prescribed for by clinicians. Inpatient rehab is residential treatment once withdrawal is managed. Inpatient mental health rehab is the track for a co-occurring mental health condition. That track matters for this class, because many people were given a benzodiazepine for anxiety in the first place. Partial hospitalization is a full weekday program with nights off site. Intensive outpatient programming is fewer hours again, built around work or study. Aftercare is the arrangement that follows.

Federal guidance describes the settings behind those names. They run from the physician’s office through intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization to acute care inpatient [5]. The same chapter sets out five detox levels of care [5]. Its medically monitored inpatient level provides 24-hour medically supervised detoxification [5]. Its most intensive level provides 24-hour care in an acute care inpatient setting [5].

Which one fits is decided at assessment. Our guides to Levels of Care and Inpatient Rehab set out what the tiers involve. Outpatient Rehab covers the step-down end.

Medication Options for Benzodiazepine Use Disorder

Here the honest answer is narrower than people expect. Saying so is more useful than implying otherwise.

No medication treats benzodiazepine use disorder the way buprenorphine or naltrexone treat an opioid use disorder. Federal guidance says there are a limited number of controlled trials to guide the management of benzodiazepine and other sedative-hypnotic withdrawal [4]. Although sedative-hypnotic withdrawal scales have been used in research studies, they are not widely available for clinical practice [4]. So monitoring leans on examination, mental status and vital signs rather than one score [4].

What medication does here is manage the withdrawal itself, under supervision. The order runs the opposite way to most people’s instinct. Before any tapering regimen begins, the person must be fully stabilized, which means all signs and symptoms of withdrawal must be improved [4]. Without proper stabilization, no tapering scheme will succeed [4].

This page gives no schedule, no rate and no dose. That is deliberate. Federal drug-safety guidance states that no standard benzodiazepine tapering schedule is suitable for all patients [1]. It says the plan has to be patient-specific, with ongoing monitoring and support [1]. A number copied off a web page is the opposite of that.

Where alcohol or opioid use sits alongside the benzodiazepine use, medications do exist for those disorders. Our page on Medication Assisted Treatment sets out what they are. The prescriber holding the chart decides all of it.

Paying for Benzodiazepine Rehab in Texas

Commercial plans. The campus page carries an accepted-insurance note in its own words. It says Promises Brazos Valley is in-network with most major insurance carriers including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana and United [9]. That is the campus’s general statement about carriers, not an answer about your policy. A benefits check against your own plan is still the step that produces real numbers.

Texas Medicaid. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission describes Medicaid and CHIP as health coverage for low-income children, families, seniors and people with disabilities [8]. Under the heading Texas Medicaid and CHIP Programs, the same agency lists STAR, STAR Kids, STAR Health and STAR+PLUS among its programs [10]. What is covered for one member is set through that member’s own plan. Confirm the benefit, and any prior authorization rule for the level of care recommended, before a start date rather than after one.

The federal floor. Under the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, a plan that covers mental health and substance use care may not apply harsher limits to it than it applies to medical and surgical care, and that reaches prior authorization and step therapy as well as visit and day caps [6]. The scope is worth knowing: it applies to non-federal governmental plans with more than 50 employees, to group health plans of private employers with more than 50 employees, and to the individual market [6]. Plans from small employers are not covered directly; they get comparable protection through the Affordable Care Act’s essential health benefits requirement. Marketplace plans cover mental health and substance use disorder services as an essential health benefit, cannot refuse or surcharge a pre-existing condition, and cannot apply yearly or lifetime dollar limits [7].

Our pages on Does Insurance Cover Rehab? and How Much Does Rehab Cost? set out the questions worth putting to a benefits representative.

Traveling Within Texas, and From Neighboring States

Texas is large enough that the drive is a real part of the decision. It is worth deciding on purpose.

College Station sits between the Houston, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth metros rather than inside any of them. For most of the state that means a planned drive, not a commute. For the detox stage it means arranging a ride rather than driving yourself.

Distance from routine is not only a cost. Being outside the usual pattern is part of what makes a residential stay work. The same distance that makes visiting harder also makes the first two weeks quieter.

The stage where distance turns into a real constraint is the step-down. A partial hospitalization program or an intensive outpatient schedule means repeated trips. So settle one question before admission: where will those sessions happen, and who will run them. Ask admissions at the start, not at discharge. Our walkthrough of How to Get Into Rehab covers what the first call needs from you. The full list of Drug & Alcohol Rehab Facilities shows what the family runs elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get benzodiazepine treatment in Texas?

Promises Brazos Valley, at 3550 Normand Drive in College Station, is the campus this page routes to. Its own page publishes medical detox, inpatient rehab, inpatient mental health rehab, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programming and aftercare, so withdrawal management and treatment sit on one site. For options beyond our own campuses, SAMHSA’s help pages collect the national helplines and treatment locators, including FindTreatment.gov.

Do I need detox before benzodiazepine rehab?

Often, and this is a class where it matters. Stopping abruptly or reducing the dose too quickly can cause withdrawal reactions including seizures, which can be life-threatening. Federal guidance notes that a withdrawal seizure may occur without being preceded by other evidence of withdrawal. An assessment decides the setting. If someone is having a seizure, is unresponsive or has trouble breathing, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988.

Does Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas cover benzodiazepine rehab?

The campus page’s accepted-insurance note names Blue Cross Blue Shield among the carriers Promises Brazos Valley is in-network with. Cost sharing and prior authorization are still set plan by plan rather than by brand, so verify against your own policy. Under federal parity rules, a plan that covers this care may not apply harsher limits to it than it applies to medical and surgical care, including prior authorization.

How long is benzodiazepine treatment?

Length follows clinical progress rather than a calendar, but the campus does publish figures. Promises Brazos Valley says treatment length depends on each patient’s clinical needs and insurance coverage, that the average overall stay is approximately 21-28 days, that detox-only stays are available with detox typically lasting approximately seven days, and that longer stays are determined on a case-by-case basis. The withdrawal stage itself runs until the person is stabilized, which federal guidance treats as the precondition for anything that follows rather than as a date, and detoxification is the start of treatment and not the whole of it.

Can I be admitted this week?

That depends on the level of care recommended and on current availability, and no page can promise a date. Having the pieces ready shortens it. The campus’s own what-to-expect page asks for a picture ID, an insurance card and a prescription or pharmacy benefits card, and for a complete list of all current medications including supplements and over-the-counter medications, plus current prescription medications in their original, labeled prescription bottles – it adds that medications brought to the facility must remain in their original, labeled bottles and will be secured by the nursing department. Bring a straight account of recent use as well. If withdrawal has already started, say so in the first minute of the call so it can be triaged properly.
