Comprehensive care options include medical detox, residential rehab treatment, partial hospitalization and virtual intensive outpatient programming.
Excellence You Can Trust
The Right Step Houston is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. For more than 30 years, the facility has supported adults in the Houston area as they work toward recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Our multidisciplinary team includes medical providers, nurses, therapists and addiction treatment professionals experienced in treating substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Together, they provide evidence-based, individualized and trauma-informed care designed to support patients throughout the recovery process.
We believe effective addiction treatment should address the whole person rather than focusing only on substance use. Through individualized care, patients can explore the physical, emotional and behavioral factors contributing to addiction while developing healthier ways to manage cravings, stress and difficult situations.Treatment combines medical support with individual counseling, group therapy, 12-step principles, expressive activities and practical skill development. Gender-specific housing and therapy groups provide focused peer support while helping patients strengthen coping skills, improve emotional well-being and prepare for continued recovery.
Levels of Care
At The Right Step Houston, our clinical team conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand each patient’s substance use, health history and treatment needs. This information guides the development of an individualized treatment plan and helps determine the most appropriate starting level of care. As patients make progress, they may transition into programs that offer greater independence while maintaining continued clinical support.
Medical Detox
For many patients beginning recovery from drugs or alcohol, treatment starts with medical detoxification. During this process, substances are safely eliminated from the body under continuous supervision from medical professionals. The length and symptoms of detox vary based on the substances used, the duration of use and other health factors. Our medical team works to make the process as safe and comfortable as possible, using medications when clinically appropriate. Detox-only treatment may be available with clinical approval, although patients are encouraged to continue into further treatment when appropriate
Residential Rehab Treatment
Residential rehab treatment provides a structured environment where patients live at the facility and receive around-the-clock support. Patients participate in counseling, group therapy, medical services and therapeutic activities designed to address the physical, emotional and behavioral effects of substance use.By stepping away from daily triggers and responsibilities, patients can focus fully on identifying unhealthy patterns, developing coping strategies and building a foundation for continued recovery. Treatment can also address co-occurring mental health conditions that may affect or contribute to substance use.
Partial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides structured treatment with greater independence than residential rehab. Patients participate in therapy, clinical programming and skills development during the day while beginning to practice greater autonomy outside scheduled treatment hours.PHP may serve as a transition from residential treatment or as a direct starting point for patients whose needs do not require around-the-clock residential care. Patients may live on site or off site while participating in the program.
Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program
Virtual intensive outpatient programming provides continued therapy and support with fewer treatment hours than PHP. Available to Texas residents, the program allows patients to participate in structured care remotely while applying coping strategies and recovery skills in their daily lives.Individual counseling and group therapy help patients remain connected to treatment as they return to work, family responsibilities and community life.
Aftercare Planning
Recovery continues after formal treatment ends. Before discharge, the clinical team helps each patient develop an individualized aftercare plan designed to support continued progress and reduce the risk of relapse.Aftercare recommendations may include continued therapy, peer support groups, recovery meetings and connections to community providers. Patients can also remain connected through alumni services and ongoing recovery support.
Types of Therapy Provided
Our evidence-based treatment approach combines clinical expertise with individualized care for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Patients may participate in one-on-one counseling, group therapy and family support as clinically appropriate. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s needs and may include therapeutic approaches such as:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps patients identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that may contribute to substance use or emotional distress. Patients learn to recognize triggers, reconsider unhealthy beliefs and practice healthier responses to difficult situations.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT teaches patients how to manage intense emotions, tolerate distress and respond to challenges more effectively. By balancing acceptance with positive behavior change, patients can strengthen emotional regulation and improve their relationships.
Motivational Interviewing: Motivational interviewing helps patients explore their personal reasons for making positive changes. Through supportive conversations, patients can work through uncertainty, strengthen motivation and build confidence in their ability to move forward.
Trauma-Informed Care: Trauma-informed care recognizes how past experiences can affect thoughts, emotions, relationships and substance use. Treatment emphasizes safety and trust while helping patients develop practical coping skills and move forward without being defined by trauma.
