Washburn House provides a comfortable and supportive environment for adults seeking treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Located in Worcester, Massachusetts, the facility offers a structured residential setting where patients can step away from daily triggers and focus on recovery. Comfortable accommodations, chef-prepared meals, fitness opportunities, yoga, mindfulness activities and therapeutic programming support overall well-being throughout treatment. Comprehensive care options include medical detox, residential recovery services, full-day outpatient, half-day outpatient and standard outpatient treatment.
Excellence You Can Trust
Washburn House is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. These distinctions reflect the facility’s commitment to established standards for patient safety, treatment quality and addiction care. Our multidisciplinary team includes medical providers, nurses, therapists and addiction treatment professionals experienced in treating substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Together, they provide evidence-based, individualized care designed to support patients throughout the recovery process.
We believe effective addiction treatment should address the whole person rather than focusing only on substance use. Through individualized care, patients can explore the physical, emotional and behavioral factors contributing to addiction while developing healthier ways to manage cravings, stress and difficult situations.Treatment combines medical support with individual counseling, group therapy, family involvement, mindfulness practices and practical skill development. As patients progress, extended-care housing and outpatient services can provide continued structure while helping them prepare for greater independence.
Levels of Care
At Washburn House, our clinical team conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand each patient’s substance use, health history and treatment needs. This information guides the development of an individualized treatment plan and helps determine the most appropriate starting level of care. As patients make progress, they may transition into programs that offer greater independence while maintaining continued clinical support.
Medical Detox
For many patients beginning recovery from drugs or alcohol, treatment starts with medical detoxification. During this process, substances are safely eliminated from the body under continuous supervision from medical professionals. The length and symptoms of detox vary based on the substances used, the duration of use and other health factors. Our medical team works to make the process as safe and comfortable as possible, using medications when clinically appropriate. Once detox is complete, patients may transition into continued treatment to address the underlying causes and effects of substance use.
Residential Recovery Services (RRS)
Residential recovery services (RRS) provide a structured environment where patients live at the facility and receive ongoing support. Patients participate in individual counseling, group therapy, medical services and therapeutic activities designed to address the physical, emotional and behavioral effects of addiction.By stepping away from daily triggers and responsibilities, patients can focus on identifying unhealthy patterns, building coping skills and creating a foundation for continued recovery. Treatment can also address co-occurring mental health symptoms that may affect or contribute to substance use.
Full-Day Outpatient Program
The full-day outpatient program (PHP) provides structured treatment with greater independence than residential care. Patients participate in therapy, clinical programming and recovery-focused activities throughout the day while living off site or in supportive extended-care housing. This level of care may serve as a transition from residential treatment or as an appropriate starting point for patients who need significant structure without around-the-clock residential support.
Half-Day Outpatient Program
The half-day outpatient program (IOP) offers continued therapy and support with fewer treatment hours than the full-day program. This increased flexibility allows patients to practice coping strategies and healthy routines in everyday life while remaining connected to clinical care. Individual counseling, group therapy and relapse-prevention planning help patients maintain progress as they return to work, family responsibilities and community life.
Outpatient Treatment
Standard outpatient treatment provides ongoing support for patients who require fewer scheduled treatment hours. Services may include individual counseling, group therapy and continued recovery planning based on each patient’s needs. Outpatient care can help patients strengthen the skills developed in earlier treatment while maintaining greater independence in their daily lives.
Aftercare Planning
Recovery continues after formal treatment ends. Discharge planning begins early in treatment so each patient can develop an individualized plan for continued support and long-term progress.Aftercare recommendations may include continued therapy, outpatient services, medication management, peer support groups, recovery meetings and connections to community providers. Patients may also transition into structured sober living or extended-care housing when additional support is appropriate
Types of Therapy Provided
Our evidence-based treatment approach combines clinical expertise with individualized care for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Patients may participate in one-on-one counseling, group therapy and family support as clinically appropriate. Each treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s needs and may include therapeutic approaches such as:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps patients identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviors that may contribute to substance use or emotional distress. Patients learn to recognize triggers, reconsider unhealthy beliefs and practice healthier responses to difficult situations.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT teaches patients how to manage intense emotions, tolerate distress and respond to challenges more effectively. By balancing acceptance with positive behavior change, patients can strengthen emotional regulation and improve their relationships.
Motivational Interviewing: Motivational interviewing helps patients explore their personal reasons for making positive changes. Through supportive conversations, patients can work through uncertainty, strengthen motivation and build confidence in their ability to move forward.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Mindfulness-based therapy helps patients become more aware of their thoughts, emotions and physical responses without reacting automatically. Practices such as meditation, mindful movement and guided reflection can support emotional regulation, stress management and relapse prevention.
